January 25, 1940 photograph of the remnants of waterfront cottages ("waterfront cottage line") destroyed by fire on East Ocean View Avenue in the Ocean View section of Norfolk, Virginia. The East Ocean View Avenue structures destroyed were those of Captain Joseph D. Wood (1440), Wood's spare home (1442), Stanley G. Wood (1430), the Chesapeake Club (1434), P. Q. Lyons (1048), and the Sherwood Apartments. Other persons mentioned in the accompanying newspaper article were Dennis Handy (Sherwood Apartment resident injured), H. L. Handy (Sherwood Apartment resident), B. D. Melchor (summer resident), Robert C. Gregorius (1450 East Ocean View Avenue home damaged), Lucielle B. Sherwood (owner of Sherwood Apartments), Mattie May Bagwell (visitor), William C. Sherwood (son of Lucielle B. Sherwood), A. F. Plant (1416 East Ocean View), Earl M. Plant, C. O. Sherwood (mother of Lucielle B. Sherwood), and Leonard Odom (Virginian-Pilot newspaper boy who photographed the fire during the blaze). |
