Circa 1926 photograph of the Sir Christopher Wren Building at The College of William and Mary in Williamsburg , Virginia . The building was constructed in 1697 and is the oldest academic building in continuous use in the United States . It was named for the renowned English architect Sir Christopher Wren , who is credited with the building's design . The Wren Building suffered from fires in 1705 , 1859 , and during the Civil War . It went through several renovations and styles until it was restored to its colonial appearance with funds from John D . Rockefeller , Jr . between 1928 and 1931 . The statue in the Wren Yard , erected in 1797 , is of Norborne Berkeley , 4th Baron Botetourt , who served as the Virginia Colonial Governor from 1768-1770 . The original statue is located inside the Earl Gregg Swem Library on campus .
