Description
Circa 1928 photograph of a monument marking the location of the first Colonial State House constructed after the Virginia capital moved from Jamestown to Williamsburg , Virginia in 1699 . Placed there by the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities around 1897 , it was located on the east side of Blair Street and Duke of Gloucester Street . The first building , erected between 1701-1705 , was destroyed by fire in 1747 . A second building was constructed on the site soon after but was abandoned in 1779 when the General Assembly moved the state capitol to Richmond . The building later served as a school , a military hospital , and a court . It was destroyed by fire in 1832 . It was reconstructed by the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation in 1932-1933 . The Foundation was able to replicate the 1705 design using a significant amount of surviving architectural documentation .
