Description
February 21 , 1922 photograph of the smoldering remains of the airship "Roma " after it hit high voltage power lines at Norfolk's Army Supply Base (today the location of Norfolk International Terminals) while on a trial run . Thirty four crew members lost their lives in the crash . The "Roma " was the world's largest semi-rigid airship at the time of the accident . As a result of the crash , the U.S . Congress passed a law requiring all airships to use helium instead of hydrogen air .
